Product Overview

Sodium sulfonate is a broad chemical designation covering multiple sodium salts of sulfonic acids. In lubricant additive and metalworking applications, however, the term commonly refers to this product or to another industrial sulfonate grade specifically qualified for the intended formulation.

This product contains sulfonate species with a polar ionic group and an oil-compatible hydrocarbon structure. This combination of polar and hydrocarbon functionality allows suitable grades to interact with both aqueous and oil phases. In suitable formulations, it can help disperse the oil phase within an oil-in-water emulsion while supporting more continuous protective-film coverage on metal surfaces.

SiNDA supplies industrial Sodium Sulfonate grades to customers in Africa and West Asia through an international sourcing network, subject to current manufacturer availability and destination-specific supply conditions. Product selection should be based on the intended formulation rather than the generic chemical name alone, because sulfonate content, average equivalent weight and its distribution, carrier-oil content, water content and inorganic-salt level can differ between grades.

Operational Applications

This product is primarily used in formulations where oil–water interaction and metal-surface protection must be managed simultaneously.

Typical applications include:

  • Soluble cutting oils
  • Semi-synthetic metalworking fluids
  • Rust-preventive oils and protective coatings
  • Drawing and forming lubricants
  • Industrial cleaners containing an oily phase
  • Selected industrial-oil formulations requiring supplementary emulsification or rust protection

For example, in a soluble cutting-oil concentrate, mentioned product can help the oil phase form and maintain an oil-in-water emulsion after the concentrate is diluted into water. The intended outcome is a more uniform working fluid with improved resistance to oil separation, provided that the complete emulsifier package is compatible with the base oil, dilution water, operating pH and expected contamination conditions.

In rust-preventive oils, the polar sulfonate functionality can contribute to interaction with the metal surface while the hydrocarbon portion remains compatible with the oil phase. This can support a more continuous protective barrier between the metal and moisture.

Performance Characteristics

Emulsification Support

Suitable Sodium Sulfonate grades reduce oil–water interfacial tension and support the formation and stability of oil-in-water emulsions.

Operational outcome: Improved emulsion uniformity can support more consistent cooling, lubrication and metal-surface coverage during machining.

Corrosion Inhibition

The additive can contribute to the formation of an adsorbed protective layer on metal surfaces, although the level of protection and staining tendency must be verified for each ferrous or non-ferrous substrate.

Operational outcome: Reduced direct contact between metal, water and corrosive contaminants can help limit flash rust during processing or temporary storage.

Wetting and Dispersion

Its surface-active structure can improve the wetting and distribution of the oil phase and compatible formulation components.

Its surface-active structure can improve the wetting and distribution of the oil phase and compatible formulation components.

Oil-Film Retention

Oil-compatible Sodium Sulfonate grades can support the continuity and surface coverage of protective oil films.

Operational outcome: More continuous oil-film coverage can contribute to corrosion protection during handling, intermediate storage or transportation.

Performance depends on treat rate, sulfonate content, average equivalent weight, base-oil compatibility, co-emulsifiers, operating pH, water hardness, electrolyte concentration and contamination level. Laboratory formulation testing is therefore required before commercial use.

Technical Specifications

Because the mentioned product is supplied in multiple natural, synthetic and carrier-diluted commercial grades, no single specification or typical-value range applies to the complete product category. Buyers should request a Technical Data Sheet and Certificate of Analysis covering at least:

  • Product type and chemical description
  • Active sulfonate content
  • Average equivalent weight and applicable test method
  • Carrier-oil, process-oil or solvent content, as applicable
  • Water content
  • Appearance and color
  • Density
  • Viscosity
  • pH of a specified aqueous dilution, alkalinity or acid value, where applicable
  • Inorganic salt content
  • Recommended storage conditions
  • Manufacturer specification limits and batch COA results for the controlled parameters

A product described only as “Sodium Sulfonate” should not be approved before confirming whether it is a petroleum sulfonate, alkylbenzene sulfonate, alkane sulfonate, olefin sulfonate or another sulfonate family. These materials differ in composition, solubility and intended use and must not be treated as automatically interchangeable.

Compatibility and Limitations

This product is primarily associated with mineral-oil-based formulations, although compatibility with PAO, ester, vegetable-oil and other synthetic or renewable base fluids is grade-specific and must be verified in the complete formulation.

Particular attention should be given to:

  • Base oil polarity and viscosity
  • Compatibility with co-emulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors and other ionic surfactants, particularly cationic materials
  • Water hardness and electrolyte concentration
  • Operating pH
  • Rust protection and staining tendency on the intended ferrous and non-ferrous metals
  • Foam tendency
  • Emulsion stability after contamination
  • Long-term storage stability

Where substantial reserve alkalinity and acid neutralization are required, over based calcium or magnesium sulfonate detergents are generally more relevant than conventional Sodium Sulfonate. For strong acid neutralization in engine-oil formulations, over based calcium or magnesium sulfonates are normally more relevant.

This product should not automatically be treated as a complete stand-alone corrosion-inhibitor package. In severe conditions—such as continuous water exposure, salt contamination, high humidity or prolonged outdoor storage—it may need to be combined with additional corrosion inhibitors.

Selection Guidance

Give priority to a grade with documented emulsification performance when the primary objective is to formulate a stable oil-in-water metalworking fluid.

Give priority to a higher-average-equivalent-weight Sodium Sulfonate grade when rust prevention and protective-film performance are more important than maximum emulsification strength.

Do not select the product based only on price per kilogram. Compare sulfonate content, average equivalent weight, carrier-oil and water content, inorganic-salt level and recommended treat rate. A lower-cost diluted grade may require a higher treatment rate and therefore produce a higher effective formulation cost.

Before approving a grade, conduct laboratory tests using the actual base oil, intended process-water quality, expected dilution ratio and proposed treat rate. Recommended evaluations include emulsion stability at the expected water hardness, rust protection, foam tendency, ferrous- and non-ferrous-metal staining, concentrate storage stability and performance after representative contamination.

Compliance and Quality Verification

Applicable specifications and test methods depend on the manufacturer and grade. Subject to manufacturer availability, SiNDA can provide the applicable TDS, SDS and batch-specific COA or related quality documentation for technical evaluation.

Customers requiring specific ASTM or ISO test methods, OEM approvals, regulatory status or internal plant acceptance criteria should submit those requirements before ordering. Compliance should only be claimed when supported by the relevant manufacturer documentation or test report.

Industrial FAQ

Is Sodium Sulfonate the same as Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate?

No. Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate is a chemically distinct surfactant commonly used in detergent and personal-care cleansing systems. It must not be treated as interchangeable with Sodium Sulfonate grades qualified for lubricant or metalworking applications.

Can it be used in engine oils?

Its suitability is formulation specific. Conventional Sodium Sulfonate is not normally selected as the primary detergent or TBN source in modern engine oils and is not a direct replacement for over based calcium or magnesium sulfonate detergents used for reserve alkalinity and deposit control.

Is it suitable for hard-water emulsions?

Suitability cannot be assumed. Calcium and magnesium ions in hard water can reduce emulsion stability, alter corrosion performance and contribute to scum, precipitate or deposit formation. The product must be tested with the actual process of water.

Can one grade be used for both emulsification and rust prevention?

Some grades provide both functions, but the balance varies with average equivalent weight and composition. Lower-average-equivalent-weight grades generally favor emulsification, whereas higher-average-equivalent-weight grades are typically selected when stronger rust prevention is required.
