Product Overview

Magnesium Sulfonate is an oil-soluble metallic detergent used in engine oils, industrial lubricants, greases and selected fuel-oil formulations. Depending on the grade, it can provide detergency, reserve alkalinity, rust protection and corrosion control.

Commercial products may be based on petroleum-derived or synthetic sulfonic acids and are typically supplied in a mineral-oil or other grade-specific diluent. The sulfonate structure, over basing chemistry and carrier oil must therefore be confirmed from the individual product’s Technical Data Sheet.

In an over based grade, the alkaline reserve helps neutralize acidic combustion and oxidation by-products before they promote corrosive attack. Separately, the surface-active detergent structure contributes to the control of high-temperature deposits on engine components. Its detergent structure also supports the control of deposits on hot metal surfaces. It is normally combined with dispersants, antioxidants, anti-wear agents and other components rather than used as a complete additive package by itself.

SiNDA supplies grade-specific magnesium sulfonate lubricant additives, including neutral and over based grades, from qualified international manufacturers, subject to availability, application requirements and destination-market regulations. For each quotation, SiNDA confirms the selected manufacturer, country of origin, grade type, TBN, magnesium content, sulfonate chemistry, diluent oil, packaging and available technical documentation.

Applications by Grade Type

The appropriate application of this product depends on whether the selected product is a neutral rust-inhibitor grade, an over based lubricant detergent or a specialized fire-side additive.

Over based Detergent Grades

Over based magnesium sulfonate may be evaluated for:

  • Passenger-car motor oils
  • Heavy-duty diesel engine oils
  • Marine engine lubricants
  • Stationary diesel-engine lubricants
  • Other combustion-engine lubricants requiring detergency and alkaline reserve

In engine oils, an over based grade can contribute to piston and metal-surface cleanliness, high-temperature deposit control, acid neutralization and corrosion protection. Its alkaline reserve helps neutralize acidic combustion and oxidation by-products before they promote corrosive attack.

The required treat rate should not be determined from the additive’s TBN alone. It must be calculated according to the additive’s TBN and magnesium content, the finished oil’s required TBN and sulfated-ash limit, the contribution of other metal-containing detergents, the detergent–dispersant balance and the applicable engine-oil performance category. The final dosage must be validated through laboratory, bench and, where required, engine testing.

Neutral and Low-Base Grades

Neutral or low-based magnesium sulfonate grades may be evaluated for:

  • Hydraulic fluids
  • Circulating oils
  • Industrial and automotive gear oils
  • Paper-machine oils
  • Lubricating greases
  • Rust-preventive fluids
  • Corrosion-protective compounds

In these applications, this product is primarily selected for rust and corrosion protection rather than for a substantial contribution to reserve alkalinity. Demulsibility, filterability, hydrolytic stability, water resistance and compatibility remain grade- and formulation-specific.

Specialized Fire-Side Applications

Specialized high-magnesium fire-side additives may be used in heavy-fuel combustion systems to help control high-temperature corrosion associated with sulfur, vanadium and other fuel contaminants.

These products are application-specific and should not be considered direct substitutes for magnesium sulfonate lubricant-detergent grades. Their selection requires fuel analysis, combustion-system operating data and application-specific performance testing.

Performance Characteristics

The principal performance value of over based Magnesium Sulfonate is the combination of detergency and alkaline reserve. This helps the lubricant resist acid-driven corrosion and maintain cleaner internal surfaces under combustion-related operating conditions.

Magnesium-based detergents allow formulators to adjust the detergent-metal balance and base-number contribution of the finished lubricant. Their suitability must nevertheless be evaluated against the formulation’s sulfated-ash limit, deposit-control requirements and aftertreatment compatibility targets. Because magnesium is a metal-containing component, this product contributes to sulfated ash. Finished-oil sulfated ash depends primarily on the concentration and chemistry of the complete metal-containing additive system, while phosphorus-containing components may also affect the composition of the measured ash.

The mentioned product should not be treated as the formulation’s primary anti-wear or extreme-pressure additive unless the selected grade has documented AW/EP performance supported by application-specific testing.

Compatibility and Limitations

Compatibility must be verified in the complete formulation. The formulator should test Magnesium Sulfonate with the intended base oils, dispersants, antioxidants, anti-wear agents, viscosity modifiers, seal materials and other detergents.

Do not select a grade solely because it has the highest available TBN. Excessive detergent concentration can disturb the formulation’s sulfated-ash target, deposit balance, demulsibility, filtration, foaming or additive compatibility.

Neutral Magnesium Sulfonate is the more logical starting point when rust inhibition and water resistance are the main requirements without a major increase in alkalinity. An over based grade is more appropriate when acid-neutralizing reserve is required. Neither grade should be added to a finished lubricant without laboratory compatibility testing and performance validation. Compatibility depends on the selected grade, diluent oil, base-stock system and complete formulation and must be confirmed through laboratory blending, compatibility and storage-stability testing.

Compliance and Test Methods

Depending on the supplied grade, relevant analytical methods may include ASTM D2896 for TBN, ASTM D445 for kinematic viscosity, ASTM D4052 for density, ASTM D92 for flash point, ASTM D4951 for elemental magnesium and ASTM D874 for sulfated ash.

These are test methods, not finished-lubricant approvals. Use of this product does not by itself establish compliance with an API service category, ACEA Oil Sequence, OEM specification or marine-engine lubricant requirement. Any performance claim applies to the complete finished formulation and must follow the applicable testing, licensing, registration or approval process.

Industrial FAQ

Is Magnesium Sulfonate the same as calcium sulfonate?

No. Both are metallic sulfonate detergents, but they use different metal cations and can produce different alkalinity, ash, rust-control and formulation responses. Substitution should be based on testing, not a one-to-one treat-rate assumption.

Can it be used as a standalone engine-oil additive?

No. It performs specific detergent, neutralizing and corrosion-control functions but normally requires dispersants, anti-wear additives, antioxidants and other components to create a complete engine-oil package.

How should the correct grade be selected?

Start with the required finished-oil TBN, sulfated-ash limit, target magnesium level, base-oil type and applicable performance category. Then compare candidate grades using their TDS, COA and laboratory blend results.
